A NEW BREED!
(SPEECH OF KB BICOL REGIONAL GOVERNOR JENNIS I. NIDEA [30-01)] READ BY TONYBOY IMPERIAL [500-01] DURING THE CONFIRMATION AND ELEVATION OF THE CASTILLA [KB516] CHAPTER, SORSOGON ON OCTOBER 20, 2009)
“A NEW BREED OF GENERATION”
G R E E T I N G S !
At the outset, I would like to extend my big, big 142 to Sir Tonyboy Imperial (500-06), one of the pillars of KB Bicol not only in the province of Albay but of the entire KB Bicol organization, for accepting my request to represent me and likewise, extending my sincerest apology to the officers and 41s of kb516 for not attending this momentous occasion.
Much as I wish to 76 here but circumstances did not permit me. As you are having this event, I am now confine at the Mother Seton Hospital in Naga City to prepare for my right eye lens implant operation scheduled tomorrow which will be performed by surgeon-opthalmologist, Dr. Roberto Mendoza. You see, about 2 months ago, I was diagnosed to have a cataract problem. In fact, I was told that an immediate OP is needed before it gets serious and to raise P30,000 to P 50,000. Unfortunately, I don't have that amount until last September 30, while I was at the Disaster Management and Rescue Training at Camp Patricia, Pamplona, Cam. Sur that the visibility of my right eye became zero or totally blind kaya napilitan na ako magpa schedule ng OP. I'm so optimistic, especially with your prayers, that God will guide the hands of the good doctor and his OP staff, this 95 will be successful and God will bring back my 20-20 vision, at least on my right eye.
When Pastor Raffy, sir 516-01, informed me via cell phone I was actually at the training site and still has 74 16 on right eye so I told him that I will come. And last week, when 516-16 called me thru my cell phone, 516-01 informed me that this event will push through as schedule, I was saddened because I know, I would not be able to be present, so I told him that I will request sir 500-06 to represent me instead.
So much for it my brothers and sisters in Kabalikat Bicol, I really would like to be always present on occasion such as this because this is a sign of growth to our group. Growth that signals the KB Bicol being accepted by the people and the community.
Your theme: “A NEW BREED OF GENERATION” for me, is very much appropriate in today's occasion as it reflects the continuous growth, and the expansion of our organization. Elevating applicants into a regular membership status is, actually, a way of welcoming a new breed of generation into our fold. A new breed of generation whom I considered as a new hope of KB Bicol who will surely continue the group's advocacy: to make volunteerism a way of life.
My brothers and sisters in Kabalikat Bicol, please permit me to reminisce our humble beginnings. We started our group's bonding more than 3 years ago with only 29 chapters. But now we are almost 70 chapters which include our chapters in Metro Manila and Quezon province. Added to this, was the launching of our new national organization – the KABALIKATNET PHILIPPINES or KbNet where KB Bicol, as an organization, is one of the 3 incorporators which include: Kabalikat Malaya and Kabalikat Mediacom. So, in just more than 3 years, our group, actually, has more than 120 chapters with more than 10,000 strong members nationwide. And with the additional new breed into our fold, our group becomes bigger and bigger and continuously growing.
When we started our group, we were also known as radio communicators group. However, we are also the first responders during emergencies especially in cases of vehicular accidents along Maharlika highways. Because of this, the public perception is that, we KB Bicol 41s, knew how to respond, handle and perform first aid and rescue, but what the public doesn't know is that, we, the KB Bicol 41s, do not actually know how to handle such emergency circumstances properly.
So in order to correct this kind of situation, our organization's main thrust now is prove to the public that we KB Bicol is not only good in radio communication networking, but also we are well-trained rescuers and/or responders. And for us to enhance our capabilities in handling such situations, we need to undergo training on disaster management and rescue operation.
At more than 100 41s from the first district of Camarines Sur including those 41s from KB222, Tabaco City; 503, Oas, both of Albay provinces and those from Labo and Daet in Cam. Norte and Calauag and Atimonan in Quezon, have just finished a 6-day Disaster Management and Rescue Training and these newly graduates are now certified first aiders and rescuers/responders accredited by the Philippine National Red Cross.
We are very fortunate, that through the efforts of your regional governor, and with the help of Congressman Dato Arroyo of the first district of Cam. Sur, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office had granted us the amount of FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND PESOS. Even though the said cash grant was actually intended for the chapters within the Cam. Sur's first district only, I open the training opportunities to our 41s from other chapters even outside the district of Cong. Dato. However, only few took the opportunities.
On Oct 28, the 4th batch, 41s from Del Gallego (KB217) and Ragay (KB300) will converge at the GRS Elementary School to undergo such training while additional trainees from Pamplona-Pasacao (KB120) and Libmanan (KB241) will also undergo training on Nov. 5 at Camp Patricia, a Girls Scout Camp at Pamplona. After said training, a Mini Skills Olympics on Retrieval and Rescue, an inter-chapter competition and the Mass Graduation will be held at Libmanan, Cam. Sur on the last Saturday and Sunday of November, this year with the prize at stake, Emergency Equipment for the 3 winning chapters (Spine Board, Short Board, Splint, First Aid Kit, Triangular Bondages, etc.) will be given.
After this, if funds are still available, the same training will be conducted in Cam. Norte, Albay and Sorsogon. Masbate, on the other hand, particularly, the LGU of San Pascual headed by Mayor Zacky Lazaro (161-17) will sponsor the same training to be financed coming from the local funds.
These trainings, my brothers and sisters, are only the first part of our programs and activities with the directions geared towards organizing a Disaster And Rescue Teams (DART) in every chapter of KB Bicol.
With these, KABALIKAT BICOL and being a member of KabalikatNet Philippines Inc., which was first organized as a radio communication group, a new national network and umbrella organization of volunteer groups in the country, will become A VOLUNTEER GROUP who truly adhere and practice VOLUNTEERISM AS A WAY OF LIFE.
Lastly, to our newly elevated 41s, being promoted as regular 41 is not only a celebration of jubilation but also a preparation and/or a beginning to face new challenges: A challenge to do the tasks of being a volunteer-member of KB Bicol, A challenge to become worthy member of KB Bicol, which is awarded by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC)'s 2009 Gawad Kalasag Award as Best Private / Volunteer Organization in the Philippines and a challenge to have legacy in our community. For all the newly elevated 41s, congratulations, welcome to KB Bicol and good luck.
To our newly confirmed applicants, please be reminded that joining KB Bicol is not a picnic. Joining KB Bicol is not for fun. But rather it will confront you of lots of sacrifices -- time, efforts and money -- in the name of service to people and community and in the spirit of volunteerism. To all of you newly confirmed applicants, good luck!
To all of us here present, and to all the officialdom and members of KB Bicol and the KabalikatNet Philippines, may God bless us all.
BIG, BIG 142 AND MY 44s TO EVERYONE!
